About 504
504 Squadron is located at RAF Cottesmore, Oakham in the county of Rutland, East Midlands. It is one of twenty Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAuxAF) Squadrons situated throughout England and Scotland. Its history dates back over 75 years to the late 1920's when it was formed as a Special Reserve Squadron. Whilst popular during World War II and the immediate post war period such units were later disbanded.
Their reformation coincided with the Governments plan to reduce the size of the regular Armed Forces whilst increasing the role played by part time reservists. 504 Squadron was reformed at Cottesmore in October 1999, initially with a "survive to operate" (STO)capability for the RAF and a limited trade support to Joint Force Harrier (JFH) operations. However, the
current role is to provide a "force protection" (FP) capability.
Whilst Squadron members follow an active calendar of FP, trade and adventure training, its not all-hard work; several social and sporting events are included in the year's programme.
